From origins to today

From GeoFusion to Spatiqon

The project was originally called GeoFusion and was built around the open source frameworks Lizmap and G3W-Suite for publishing GIS on the web. Today it has evolved into Spatiqon: a proprietary framework that integrates and orchestrates those systems into a single platform.

What is Spatiqon and how does it differ from a standard WebGIS?
Spatiqon is not a WebGIS viewer but a complete territorial GIS platform with 145+ REST API endpoints, 28+ integrated modules and 35,000+ lines of client-side JavaScript. It integrates into a single web interface what would normally require separate software: QGIS Desktop for editing, a GeoServer for distribution, WebODM for drone photogrammetry, AI tools, public Italian cadastral data, a 3D MapLibre globe, multi-map split view, a command palette, combined BBox search across Land Registry/ISTAT/RNDT, municipal management software and mobile sync. All accessible from the browser with no installation.
What vector editing operations are possible?
Spatiqon replicates the QGIS Desktop editing workflow: Toggle Editing per layer, drawing points/lines/polygons/rectangles/circles with vertex snapping, geometry editing via vertex drag&drop on the map. Advanced operations: split feature with YES/NO and attribute copy from the parent, merging multiple features, clip layer with a freely drawn path. For attributes: inline editing, Field Calculator with full QGIS expressions (area, perimeter, length, custom fields), add/rename/delete fields via the QGIS API, permanent CSV join, spatial join (geopandas), parent-child relationships, binary attachments on PostGIS.
What public Italian data is integrated?
Spatiqon directly integrates: Revenue Agency — cadastral parcel WFS by bbox, sheet/parcel search, buildings/roads/water bodies WMS, TAF archives (fixed-width → CSV). ISTAT — 2026 administrative boundaries (municipalities, provinces, regions, generalized and detailed), 300m coastal strip, asynchronous download with task progress. RNDT/geodati.gov.it — search of metadata and WMS/WFS/WMTS/ATOM services or downloadable files for the selected area. OpenStreetMap — data download by bbox via the Overpass API with automatic categorization. All layers can be imported directly into the Spatiqon project.
How does raster analysis work in Spatiqon?
The raster module includes: spectral index calculation (NDVI, NDBI, NDWI, EVI) with auto-applied pseudo-color renderer, per-band statistics (min/max/mean/stddev), histogram, pixel value identification by lat/lon click, complete raster metadata. Elevation analysis: profile from DEM with interactive chart + CSV download, multiple cross-sections with cross-sectional area calculation (trapezoidal rule) + SVG/CSV export, contour line generation via QGIS Processing (gdal:contour). Raster styling: min-max, percentile, custom colormap, pseudo-color renderer applied server-side via PyQGIS.
What does browser-based QGIS geoprocessing include?
Spatiqon exposes the entire QGIS Processing toolbox: native QGIS, GDAL, GRASS GIS, SAGA algorithms. Buffer, dissolve, clip, intersect, union, convex hull, centroid, simplify, rasterize, hillshade, slope, aspect, TIN, Voronoi, distance matrix and much more. It also includes: real-time QGIS expression validator, expression evaluator, function help, QGIS symbol library (marker/line/fill) with PNG preview, color ramps (viridis, plasma, Reds...) with palette preview, layer CRS reprojection, CRS assignment/change.
How does the Geospatial AI module work?
The GeoAI module runs deep learning models on geographic imagery through an asynchronous Python bridge. It includes: SAM (Segment Anything Model) for automatic semantic segmentation on orthophotos/rasters, DeepForest for tree detection and counting from aerial imagery. Models are downloaded and managed from the browser. Analysis happens on an area interactively selected on the map (capture area + clip raster). Tasks are asynchronous and Redis-backed (safe in a multi-worker gunicorn environment). NVIDIA GPU support is checked automatically. Outputs are added as layers in the project.
How does drone photogrammetry work?
Spatiqon integrates WebODM (AGPL-3.0) as a separate Docker container. From the web platform: create projects, upload drone photos, start SfM processing with parameters, monitor progress in real time, cancel tasks. After processing: download orthophoto GeoTIFF, DSM, DTM, LAZ point cloud, PLY mesh. The orthophoto is automatically imported as a COG raster layer into the QGIS project. Local Z/X/Y tiles are served even without WebODM running. The point cloud is converted with Potree Converter for 3D visualization.
What does the Municipal Services module include?
The municipal module runs in a dedicated Docker container (spatiqon-municipal:5001) accessible via an authenticated proxy with X-User-Id and X-User-Role headers. It includes: Civil Registry (civil records, family units, georeferenced residences, search by tax code), Taxation (taxes, payments, deadlines), Roads (georeferenced road network, residents, lighting), Water Network (facilities, meters, accounts), Electrical Network (substations, meters), Estate Succession (cases, assets, beneficiaries), Cemeteries (plots, deceased, concession deadlines). All data is georeferenced and viewable on the map. This module is intended strictly for internal use within the local authority (local network/intranet) and must not be exposed as a public service on the internet. Its future maintenance is currently under review.
How is security and access managed in Spatiqon?
Spatiqon implements a complete security system: mandatory TOTP 2FA (QR code setup via pyotp, middleware blocks API access until 2FA is configured), 4-level RBAC (superadmin, admin, user_plus, user) with granular read/write permissions per project. Complete user management: CRUD, roles, passwords, usernames, companies, groups. Audit log of every operation (action, timestamp, user, IP). Real-time presence (Redis heartbeat). Project sharing via temporary read-only token. Each project assignment to a user is explicit — a user only sees their own projects.
What is the built-in infrastructure management system?
The admin panel securely controls the underlying infrastructure directly from the browser. It lets you: see active services with their status; start, stop or restart individual components; start/stop logical groups; monitor system resources in real time for every active service; consult system logs.
How is Spatiqon installed and distributed?
Spatiqon is distributed as a Docker Compose stack on Ubuntu 22/24/26 or Debian 12 (with or without GPU). The main containers: spatiqon-app (Flask+PyQGIS+gunicorn), spatiqon-nginx, spatiqon-postgres, spatiqon-redis, spatiqon-martin, spatiqon-qgis-server, spatiqon-webodm, spatiqon-municipal. All services are orchestrated from the browser admin panel (start/stop/status). A standalone installation without Docker is also available. SinoCloud offers managed hosting as a service. The built-in Docker Task Manager lets you manage the container lifecycle without SSH access.
How does synchronization with QGIS Desktop and Mergin Maps work?
The Spatiqon Sync QGIS plugin downloads the project as a ZIP bundle with a SHA256 manifest, enabling incremental sync (only modified files). Pushing from desktop updates the project on Spatiqon. A heartbeat registers open QGIS Desktop sessions. Mergin Maps enables offline field data collection with a mobile app: Spatiqon imports Mergin projects and syncs changes bidirectionally via the v2025 API. URL and credential configuration is managed from the admin interface.
